During and After Treatment

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

I remember when having my root canal, the dentist ask me if I wanted to be awake or asleep during the operation.  Some people I guess opt to ‘go under’ but I preferred to just use the local anesthetic.  If some thing is going to go wrong I want to be the first to know.

Male laser hair removal is no where near that drastic, but still, it helps to know ahead of time what to expect.

Sense we will be working with a laser that can damage the eyes, you will be wearing goggles. Most people can tolerate the procedure without a topical anesthetic but know that it is available if it starts to burn.  It should burn and tingle a little.

Some report that it feels like a rubber band being snapped on your skin. You might even get a whiff of singed hair.  This is nothing to worry about unless you start seeing smoke.  (Just kidding about the smoke, that never happens – so I guess that if you do see smoke you REALLY should be worried)

As a rough estimate, shoulders might take half an hour.  The chest about 1 hour.  And a really hairy back could run you 2 hours.

Afterwards, there is a range of effects you may experience. From brief swelling and redness, to slight stinging, to a small amount of crusting. Petroleum Jelly is all you need if the latter occurs.

Let it be known that it could take up to two weeks after treatment for the hairs to fall out. Even then, you will need to endure 4 or so months / treatments before you see a noticeable difference at which point you should be about %75 less hairy.  During this time you will be advised to stay out of the sun, use a sunscreen and you might even be ask to avoid exercise in order to cause any further irritation.  Avoid waxing, plucking, and scratching the treated area.  Simply keep it clean with gentle soap and water.
