A Typical Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Whenever the day arrives for you to have your initial laser hair removal treatment, it is natural to get nervous and possibly a little anxious . This is because it’s something you have never done before and you aren’t sure what to expect. Try to unwind and think of this visit as any other doctor visit.

If there is a delay once you get there at the office, try to keep your mind busy so you’ll not fret about the approaching treatment . Perhaps a buddy could accompany you to your appointment, or, if you are alone , read a book or magazine. Having your payment prepared will also enable you to loosen up as it’ll be one less thing you need to be concerned about.

When it’s your turn to enter the treatment room, you’ll be instructed to remove all indispensable clothing and a gown shall be furnished . If pictures of the region to be treated with laser hair removal were not taken during the consultation, the nurse or assistant is going to take them now.

The area to be treated will be washed to cleanse it of any lotions, cosmetics, perfumes or deodorants. It will then be prepped with alcohol. Based on the treatment , the area may , or might not , be shaved. Your skin might be cooled before treatment to help reduce any side effects from occurring . You, and anybody else in the room, are going to be given safety goggles to wear during the procedure .

The physician , or technician, who is performing the laser hair removal procedure will perform a patch test. It will give him a chance to gauge your tolerance of the treatment and in addition pick the correct fluence levels. It will also provide the chance to experience how the laser feels and hopefully minimize some of your nervousness . A single pulse is sent to the test spot , that will be in the vicinity of the location to be treated. It will be examined for any sings of damage to the skin e.g. blistering and separation.

When the doctor is ready to begin the process , he will aim the laser at the hair follicles of the space to be treated. Because the hair follicles possess a dark pigmentation, they’ll absorb the energy out of the laser’s light. The time that is required for the procedure will be based upon the amount of hair to be removed , the point size of the beam, as well as the scanning pattern of the hand piece the doctor is using. Laser hair removal treatments might take somewhere from 12 to 60 minutes, based upon the region treated.

Many people say that the laser feels like a rubber band being snapped against your skin . Some describe it as more extreme than that . Should you be experiencing discomfort or pain , you will be provided a topical anesthesia or cooling remedies .

After the laser hair removal treatment is finished , you will be ready to get dressed and talk over post treatment care . You may go through some short-term side effects like redness and swelling , which commonly disappear within a day or 2 .

Once you have experienced your 1st laser hair removal treatment you’ll be more relaxed when you require more treatments

What Should I Look For In A Clinic

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

There are a lot of elements that go into deciding which laser hair removal center is right for you so be certain that you do your homework before you decide.

Call up possible candidates on the phone and look into their internet sites, if available. Ask questions about the process and observer the kinds of replies you get. Questions to ask include the types and brands of lasers used, how long they’ve been using them, the number of patients handled at the center and whether the first consultation is free.

You will be able to determine a great deal about a center by this initial research, but you had better still plan on visiting the center you’re turning over prior to making any final decisions.

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure and should be treated as such. The same caution should be exercised when choosing your laser technician professional as you were going under the knife.

Be sure the facility is clean and the faculty cares for you professionally. Also make a point to ask who your laser technician will be and insist that he or she sees you during the initial consultation.

Ask the clinics medical director about his or her qualifications. Check out whether he or she is Board Certified in Dermatology and whether there’s more one Board Certified doctor on the staff. Also learn about the personnel doing the procedure.

Make sure to ask about the side effects, risks  and precautions. Also find out how many treatments you’ll need for results, how long they’ll last, payment options, the cost options, the hours of operation, its policy about missed appointments, and anything else you want to know. Chances are that they will try and talk you into a contract, so make sure to read everything carefully before signing anything.

Trust your instincts. If something don’t feel just right, there are plenty of other centers around to help you.

During and After Treatment

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

I remember when having my root canal, the dentist ask me if I wanted to be awake or asleep during the operation.  Some people I guess opt to ‘go under’ but I preferred to just use the local anesthetic.  If some thing is going to go wrong I want to be the first to know.

Male laser hair removal is no where near that drastic, but still, it helps to know ahead of time what to expect.

Sense we will be working with a laser that can damage the eyes, you will be wearing goggles. Most people can tolerate the procedure without a topical anesthetic but know that it is available if it starts to burn.  It should burn and tingle a little.

Some report that it feels like a rubber band being snapped on your skin. You might even get a whiff of singed hair.  This is nothing to worry about unless you start seeing smoke.  (Just kidding about the smoke, that never happens – so I guess that if you do see smoke you REALLY should be worried)

As a rough estimate, shoulders might take half an hour.  The chest about 1 hour.  And a really hairy back could run you 2 hours.

Afterwards, there is a range of effects you may experience. From brief swelling and redness, to slight stinging, to a small amount of crusting. Petroleum Jelly is all you need if the latter occurs.

Let it be known that it could take up to two weeks after treatment for the hairs to fall out. Even then, you will need to endure 4 or so months / treatments before you see a noticeable difference at which point you should be about %75 less hairy.  During this time you will be advised to stay out of the sun, use a sunscreen and you might even be ask to avoid exercise in order to cause any further irritation.  Avoid waxing, plucking, and scratching the treated area.  Simply keep it clean with gentle soap and water.
